Biography / Gerald Bybee



Gerald Bybee is a graduate of Brigham Young University holding a BA Cum Laude in Communications with a major in photography, emphasis in advertising and public relations and a minor in Italian literature. His work experience at the university encompassed photo journalism, weddings, documentation of fine artwork, and portraiture. After college he began his career as an assistant and freelance photographer in San Francisco and later New York. He founded Bybee Studios in Salt Lake City in 1978. In 1985 Gerald returned to his native Bay Area and established Bybee Studios in a 5000 square foot warehouse loft on Folsom Street in the South of Market area of San Francisco.


Gerald specializes in photography and digital imaging for advertising and design. His work incorporates his varied experience in beauty, portraiture, traditional still life and technology. His imagery has won awards in the Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Salt Lake and San Francisco Advertising and Art Director’s shows. It has been acknowledged and reviewed in Graphi, PhotoGraphis, French PHOTO, PC Photo, Studio Photography, CA, Print, PhotoDesign and ASMP annuals.


Gerald was one of the earliest adopters of desktop imaging in the late 1980s. He began directing image compositing on workstations such as, Shima Seiki, ScitTex, and Dicomed . Later he worked hands on using SGI workstations and early Apple Macintosh desktop machines. When Color Studio and Photoshop imaging programs were introduced Gerald was among the first commercial photographers to embrace desktop imaging in his daily studio business. Bybee Studios has been an early adopter and beta tester for Apple, Adobe, Kodak, Polaroid, Fuji, HP, MacroMedia, HSC, Live Picture Inc. and Silicon Graphics and many other technology based companies.


Bybee Studios’ clientele includes; Adobe, AT&T, Autodesk, Bank of America, Charles Schwab, Macy’s, Nickelodeon, Hewlett Packard, Intel, National Semi Conductor, Kodak, Polaroid, Olympus, Silicon Graphics, United Airlines, Microsoft, Levis, Halsa, Jergens, Lubriderm, Neurtogena SAAB, Shaklee, Sutter Home Winery, Gallo, B.R. Cohn, Mondavi, Hublein, Smirnoff, Simpson and Potlatch Paper Companies. The Studio’s agency and design clientele include BBDO, J. Walter Thompson, Foote Cone & Belding, Fallon McGelligot, Ogilvy & Mather, Goodby Silverstein, McCann Erickson, Chiat Day, Michael Cronan, Jennifer Morla, Phippen Group, Zimmermann/Crowe, Mark Sackett, Vitro/Robertson, Adrian Pulfer Sibley/Petite and Pentagram. His Editorial clients include Time, Psychology Today, Maxim, Oracle Magazine and OUTSIDE.


Gerald has served as an officer and member of the Board of Directors of the San Francisco Art Directors’ Club and the San Francisco Advertising Club as well as other advertising and design trade associations nationally and regionally. He founded the Mountain West chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers, ASMP, and served as a national Board Member. He served as a member of the National Digital Committee of Advertising Photographers of America, APA. and has been a guest speaker at Seybold, PhotoPlus Expo, PMA, DIMA and other trade conferences, He speaks and teaches at various college  and university photo departments as a guest lecturer and instructor.


In 1996  Mr. Bybee purchased a former dairy farm in West Sonoma County where he devloped a small organic pinot noir vineyard  and open space habitat. Gerald works from a state-of- the-art photography and digital imaging studio at the Sebastopol vineyard. He is available for fine art portrait commissions, editorial and advertising photo and imaging assignments.
